Snap2HTML

Although this developer has been creating software since 1998, this article will focus on one, titled, "Snap2HTML", even though it may have appeared in Featured Software years ago.

Other free ware titles, at RL Vision, are;-

I wanted to try Snap2HTML in order to obtain sorted printouts of the file names contained on some old backup CDs, and hard drives.

But, this is not the only reason to use the program, because listings of folders and filenames can serve as a backup of my data holdings, at a certain point in time Or, such lists are another way to share knowledge of your data holdings to others. Also, when remotely assisting a person, it may be helpful if they could use this program to send you a directory listing from their computer.

This program maintains the folder directory structure, and, as HTML, the sanpshot of contents is also viewable in any web browser. The author also provides the output template, which is editable, should you wish to alter the output page design. For CDs, a paper printout can then be folded and nested in with the CD jacket. [Paper copies last a long time - probably longer than the CDs.]

For large listings, note that CTRL-F can be used for word searching. A sort function has also been included, along with, command line instructions, and program portability - at only about 210 Kb. Or use the supplied search field, along with * (wild card) and ? (exact match). If you add >> the search will follow into sub folders, or use > to stay in the current folder. An f: prefix list only files, while a d: prefix lists only matching folders.

Output does not have to be in HTML; it can be JSON, CSV, or plain text, including or excluding hidden operating system files.

Notice that the result looks a lot like using a file explorer; each of these folders opens, in a web browser, to display its contents - even the zipped folder.

[Since I also have a lot of old CDs with images, I may download Snap2IMG, with makes thumbnail contact sheets, suitable for printing (or sharing) using various backgrounds and thumbnail sizes. It's also free and portable.]
