December 2024 Featured Software |

Perhaps you wish to run a media file (or just the audio portion, or just the video portion) on another device that prefers a different format... like an Apple device, a smart phone, or for storage on / from DVD. As long as the original source is not copy protected, use any of these common formats (and more) 3GP, 3GPP, 3GPP2, AAC, AC3, ADTS, AMR, ASF, AVI, AVISynth, DVD, FLAC, FLV, H.261, H.263, H.264, M4A. Other Xmedia Recode features can rotate video, add or extract subtitles, fade in / out, correct colours, denoise, and add effects. Installation on an updated, 8-year old, Win10 laptop did not go smoothly, as a bunch of DLL installs appeared to be refused. (See second screen shot, below) Perhaps this attempt at installation, not as the Admin, was the problem. I later found the start / open icon in the list of installed programs and was able to click on it to access a fully functioning XMedia Recode interface. However, I worried that the Portable ZIP version might also be experiencing problems, because unzipping seemed to require much more time than usual. However, the EXE file worked. [Granted, these installers were stored on, and reading from, a slow USB flash drive.] Figure 1: Just one of many failed DLL files For a first attempt, an old CD, presume to contain unprotected video, was tried. Although the computer could 'see' the CD's contents, XMedia Recode did not recognize its presence. Perhaps, this CD was copy protected after all. Or, I considered the possibility that XMedia Recode may handle only DVD / Blu-ray disks, not CDs. [Those wishing to access protected material may wish to try the March 2024 Featured Software, "VidMasta", which may yield familiar file formats, which can then be altered by XMedia Recode. I have not tried this method.] I then looked for a suitable video file on the hard drive, and found a short, (26 second) H.264 MP4 video file (1920x1080) taken with an older cell phone. I set the saving format as MP4. The default renaming method retains the original file name, while adding an "indexed" suffix, so as to not overwrite the original file completely. The resultant file was only 5.3 MB, compared to the original 79 MB file (with no visible degradation in quality). For a final, and successful attempt, another old CD was inserted; this was one hour and forty minute 1983 family video, digitally copied from VHS-C tape to CD. It was recognized... as not protected. On this same slow laptop, all of the individual video segments, totalling 1.16 GB, were successfully up-scaled from 720p to 1080p, in about 2 and a half hours. (The process took this long, even after setting the CPU to use "Fast Start" and "Above Normal" processor priority). The final up-scaled file size was 5.05 GB. Also, remember to click the Audio \ Video Synchronization box. [The default storage location is in the user's Videos folder, on C:, unless changed.] Should you wish to add more files to a conversion, just click the menu's + sign, to add each to the queue. They will be combined into a single video file. Contrary to my original impression, that this program could change from one codex to another, it appears to keep the same file extension, while altering the size of files; this, to agree with certain hardware brands. [Note:- Not all software testing goes smoothly, as was the case here. XMedia Recode does a lot, and introduces many unfamiliar technical terms related to video and audio coding.] [Use this program to self educate about such terms, or to learn all the hidden properties of various audio and video files.] [The download and help websites required acceptance of 'cookies'. The site's web pages can be confusing, with ads for other downloads.
