Two Linux distributions

Our original May 14th meeting presenter was unable to attend our meeting. Ed Goudge and Alex Morrison stepped in to save the day with a demonstration of two specialty Linux distributions based on Ubuntu 8.04.

They showed Ubuntu Christian Edition *, which has a religious theme, protects you from surfing to "evil" sites, and has Bible study software included.

They also showed Qimo: Ubuntu for Kids it is a Ubuntu-based Linux distro, it is meant for kids age 3 and upwards, it has carton-like program icons, comes with several open source educational games (like Tuxmath, Tuxpaint, Tuxtype, GCompris and Childsplay), its user interface (UI) is based on Xfce, it has very low minimal requirements. This distribution is taylored to appeal to kids or in our case grandkids, with a simplified user interface and a lot of interesting games.

This was an interesting evening, Ed and Alex saved an otherwise disasterous meeting.

* Ubuntu Christian Edition is a free, open source operating system geared towards Christians. It is based on the popular Ubuntu. Along with the standard Ubuntu applications, Ubuntu Christian Edition includes the best available Christian software. The latest release contains GnomeSword, a top of the line Bible study program for Linux based on the Sword Project. There are several modules installed with GnomeSword including Bibles, Commentaries, and Dictionaries. Ubuntu Christian Edition also includes fully integrated web content parental controls powered by Dansguardian. A graphical tool to adjust the parental control settings has also been developed specifically for Ubuntu Christian Edition. The goal of Ubuntu Christian Edition is not to bring Christianity to Linux but to bring Linux to Christians.

The Club's General Meetings are held the second Thursday of each month at Faith United Church, 1778 Nash Road in Courtice, 7:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend.
